In order for you to be an effective pay per click marketer, you must understand the mindset of people, especially when they are online doing searches. The majority of people who are searching online are usually looking for information, it is up to you to turn that into your favor so that you can profit.
Solving A Problem
Many times when people are looking for a solution to their problem, they go to their favorite search engine, type in some words & hit the search button. Then they look at the search results hoping to find something to click. When your ad speaks to them, they will click it even though they know it is an ad.
Depending on the nature of the problem, some of them can be solved with a single purchase. Maybe a teenager is looking for acne treatment, once he makes a purchase, he stops searching. Maybe a parent has an autistic child & he is looking for help, he might continue to buy different books over time.
Some problems can be solved easily, some cannot be solved but can be controlled. For problems which be solved with a single purchase, focus your ad copy on the urgency of the problem. For problems which requires long term solutions, focus your your ad copy on the impact of the problem.
Scratching An Itch
Some people are looking to scratch an itch, it might be a hobby or they just want to find out more about a certain topic. For hobbies, it is usually an itch that can never end! For example, some people have been buying audio equipment for many years.
Depending on the hobby, some will cause people to spend money over a long period of time. Some people own many more golf clubs than they need, others have a huge collection of books, CDs, DVDs & more.
Most of the people who are scratching an itch will continue for many years to come. When it comes to hobbies, you need to do proper research so that you will know the specific insider words that your audience uses. Then, you use those words in your ad copy. When you appear as an insider, they will trust you more.

As much as pay per click marketing is an art & science, some people call it a game of numbers & psychology. Anyway all forms of direct marketing, both online & offline are really all about numbers & psychology, as simple as that.

Making Money? Spending Money?
First of some people are afraid to spend money to buy clicks because they are afraid of losing money! Think about this in another way, if for every $ 1 that you put in, you get back $ 1.5, how much more are you willing put in? Now spending money on clicks takes on a different meaning to you.

Making Profits?
When I make some profits, I will not stop there, as always, I would create more compelling ads to get more clicks, make my landing pages convert better & before I know it, a small campaign can become much profitable than when I just started it. Sometimes I even expand my traffic by getting organic traffic.
Conclusion
In short, when you make mistakes, learn from it & move on. When you make profits scale it up. Keep a marketing journal to keep track of the changes you made, what made more money, what made less money & such stuff. After all, things that you do not keep a record, you will eventually forget.
