Beginner Affiliate Marketing Tips – The Best Ways to Find a Niche That Pays

It can seem hard to find a great niche, whether you’re creating niche websites or doing niche campaigns on Squidoo or other web 2.0 platforms. People can make it really hard though, it doesn’t have to be that hard.

How to find a buying niche

When you want to find a “buying niche” think about where people are going to buy and then go look and see what it is they are buying. You can generally find keywords for those things that aren’t very competitive at all.

Going to shopping dot com is my favorite place to look. You can see all the products they sell, and when you click in any category they are shown by popularity. This tells you people are already buying what is there.

A little quick keyword research and you can usually find plenty of keywords that will be easy to rank for. When you’re doing this technique try to look for products that are in the higher price range. This way you can monetize with amazon or eBay and still get a nice commission check.

The benefits of looking for physical product niches are:

They are evergreen, people are always going to need a washing machine, or a bed. They never go out of style.

You can sell from a trusted source, like Amazon and gain credibility from their name.

You can benefit from Amazon’s amazing use of upsell, because you get commission on any product someone buys when they go through your link. You may sell a dishwasher, and then they realize they need dish soap, and jet dry etc, all of that adds up, and so does your commission.

The niches are a  LOT less competitive. You can find niches with over 75k searches a month and not one competitive site on Squidoo and minimal competition on Google.

These are the  kinds of niches you are looking for, because it means you can quickly and easily get to the top of Google search listings with minimal work, and begin to get tons of free traffic to your site, and buying through your link.

Bottom line Don’t make finding a niche harder than it has to be. The niche(s) you choose is where your money is at. Beginner Affiliate Marketing Tips – The Best Way to Make Money Out of the Gate

An interesting question was posed recently, one where I recognized my own answer in many of the answers given by others. The question was:

If you had to start your internet marketing business over what would you do differently?

My answer is similar to many who have been asked this same questions, but I  thought I’d take a minute and answer it here today.

The one thing I would do differently is I would have started with something I already enjoyed and knew a lot about instead of setting up a blog about how to make money online.  I could have done stuff on gardening, mental health, living in the country, tons of things, but I didn’t know those were really options.

The only real option that I saw was the “make money” niche.  When you first start learning to make money online, it’s not really clear that you can make money talking about ANYTHING!! it doesn’t have to be making money online.

The benefit of choosing a topic outside the  internet marketing area is that you have a lot less competition.  Not only are there not as many people talking about your topic, but the people that ARE talking about it probably haven’t spent millions of dollars learning how to market online.

So if you keep learning about how to market your website, and your website it outside the internet marketing niche you will have an advantage over many others in your niche. This advantage will allow you to dominate the search engines, drives lots of traffic, become an authority, and make lots of money in that niche

The first couple years I had my first internet marketing blog up I made absolutely no money on it. Really. It’s not that surprising. Here I was someone who knew next to nothing about internet marketing trying to teach other people how to do it. When I think back on it, it’s really kind of silly.  Now of course, I make money from my blog, but I could have experienced much more monetary success if I had chosen something I already knew a lot about and had marketed that instead.

bottom line – Make life a little easier on yourself, and pick a niche you love outside of the internet marketing niche. I’d like to invite you to grab a copy of my FREE newsletter ~ The Wahm Way. Beginner Affiliate Marketing Tips – Is the Auto DM on Twitter the Kiss of Death?

Do you auto direct message your twitter followers? Should you? It’s an ongoing debate amongst twitter users and marketers alike. Where you come out in the discussion really depends on a few things, including your niche, your twitter goals, and your beliefs.

There are basically two schools of thought on this:

1. Yes! Send automated direct messages when people follow you. Give people something free, and build your list while you do it!

2. NO! Don’t send a DM. People hate to be sold, and didn’t ask for your free stuff.

Both sides believe pretty strongly in their position.

Me ~ Being a reforming all or nothing thinker ~ I’m playing in the middle of this one.

I do send an automated DM to my followers. However, it does not have a link or give anything away for free. I simply say hello, it’s great to meet you and I hope they have a magical day. (or something to that affect)

I do this for a few reasons:

1. I want to connect with new followers ~ I want them to see my name so they will have it in their minds and be looking for my other tweets.

2. I think you need to build trust and some sort of relationship before you send people to anything, free or not. There will be plenty of time for me to send people to my freebie to build my list after they know, like and trust me a little bit more.

3. It’s what feels best and most in integrity to me and how I want to run my business.

So to Auto DM or Not? It really is up to you, and will probably be different depending on the niche you are in, and what your market will tolerate. You can always test it both ways and see which people seem to prefer.

Affiliate Marketing Basics – Four Things a Beginner Should Know

As I’ve said in my blog, Affiliate Marketing is probably the best, easiest and fastest way to get an internet business up and running. And, as I said, the best way to learn the business is to invest in a training course, preferably one that offers step-by-step instructions on what to do, how to do it (this one’s really important!), and when to do it. You can visit my website to see the one that I use myself.

But before you do that, there are a few things that you need to know about this business.

1) THIS IS A BUSINESS. You’ll need to approach it like one. That means, among other things, you need to take a few minutes to decide just what it is you want to accomplish, and how much work you’re willing to put in. Make some goals, plan your work, and work your plan. I know that you’ve seen offers claiming that you can make millions and work 15 minutes a week. Really?! If you’re trying to make an extra fifty bucks a week, maybe that’s all the effort you need. But if you’re trying to make real money, enough to, say, support a family in style, then I’m afraid you’re gonna have to actually work at this. That said, you won’t have to work 8 or 10 hours a day. But be prepared to give this a few hours (yes, hours, not minutes) a week.

2) This Is Not A Get-Rich-Quick Scheme. Just like anything else in life, anything worth having is worth waiting for and working towards. If you know someone who’s making big money as a lawyer, or doctor, or business owner, I promise you that their success did not come overnight. On the other hand, one of the absolute best things about Affiliate Marketing is that you don’t need 4 years of college plus 3 years of law school or 10 years of medical school and residency before things start to happen. The curve here is much, much shorter. You can see real results in months, not years. Just don’t expect to see success in days.

3) There Will Be Some Costs. If you select a training program, there are costs. If you want to make money on the internet, you’ll need a presence on the internet. That means you’ll need to register a domain (about $ 10 – $ 20 per year, per domain), host it (about $ 5 – $ 10 per month), and, depending on how your model is structured, maybe an autoresponder (about $ 20 per month). That said, the startup costs of an Internet Affiliate Marketing business (about $ 50) are WAY less than the startup cost for a traditional brick & mortar business. So if you’re balking at $ 50 to start a business that could, in less than a year, net you $ 3000 to $ 5000 per month (conservatively), consider that just the franchise fee for most fast-food chains is between $ 30,000 and $ 70,000! And that doesn’t include the building. Or the french-fry machine!

4) This Requires Discipline. To make money as an affiliate marketer, you have to take action, do the work, and keep doing the work. Even when it looks like it’ll never work. Keep at it. Besides, if it took you a whole year to start making $ 5000 a month, ask yourself, do you make $ 5000 a month at your day job? And if you do, how long did it take you to get to that point? I’ll bet it took longer than a few months!

So be disciplined, and be optimistic, and keep working on it. The money will come before you know it! Just keep in mind, every person making a living online today has, at one point asked himself, “What the heck is a blog?!” But, and this is what’s important, they found out, and kept moving forward!

Steve Griffin is the author of Real Home Business Trends, a blog dedicated to de-mystifying home based business. He cuts through the double-speak and technical jargon, and explains, in plain English, just how to get an internet business up and running from the ground up.
